Go to the website below and scroll down to the heading Decimals, then complete the first 2 activities

Body: Ask students what words/sentences they come up with when they hear the word “Budget”. Get them to share it back to the class and also why budgets are important in life. Also, discuss with students which professions use budgets and why. (E.g. teachers when buying classroom books). Show the graphic below of a typical classroom budget.

Body: Read the comprehension passage and explain the purpose and advantages of a budget.
Compare budgeted spending to actual spending to calculate variance in the class budget.
Create a budget for a given amount of money.
Suggest ways of cutting spending in a budget

Give reasons why some items would be included/removed from a budget

** Show the example above and get students to pick a favourite sport’s team of theirs and come up with their own “Budgeted Gate Sales”, “Actual Gate Sales” and “Variance”. There ticket price is $10 and they need to calculate/budget their attendance. Get them to share back to the class on the Smart Board.
Discuss the advantages of budgeting why CEO’s find it important.
Task: Create a budget for travelling overseas. You will need to travel for 7 days and consider all your expenses. You will need to include the budgeted costs, the actual costs and the variance. You have a total of $5,000 you can spend but you do not need to spend all of that money.
Plenary: Students report back on their travel, how much they spent, what they originally budgeted and their variance.

Travel Budget
Discuss the advantages of budgeting why CEO’s find it important.
Task: Create a budget for travelling overseas. You will need to travel for 7 days and consider all your expenses. You will need to include the budgeted costs, the actual costs and the variance. You have a total of $7,000 you can spend but you do not need to spend all of that money.
Plenary: Students report back on their travel, how much they spent, what they originally budgeted and their variance.

Extension: You are on Day 4 of your trip and you accidently loose a significant amount of money. In order to survive you budget that you must only spend $100 (Australian Dollars) across 1 night and 2 full days. You will still need to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and have a place to sleep (no sleeping in the park for free) and perhaps try and enjoy a the city. It’s up to you where you decide to sleep, what you decide to eat and what you decide to see and do with your money, however you must keep it below $100 just for those two days. Please set it up in your book below your table and show the budgeted cost, the actual cost and the variance. Good luck :)
Word Problems
Body: Ss try solving the word problems below. They start from task 1 and then move on. They will need to justify which strategy you used for only the first three answers for each task. That means that they will need to write it down. They cannot use algorithm.

Task 1: Harder Word Problems

Want to win a TNT? Then start teaching your friends

1. In your group of 5, you must watch each video in the order listed below.
2. You must watch the entire video regardless whether you know it or not.
3. After each video, you must ask other members in your group 'Did you get it completely?" Write an example of how to do it in your book. Each person in the group needs to do this.
4. If anyone is unsure, it is the responsibility of those students who have understood to teach those who do not understand. My suggestion, provide examples and get those people to practice.
5. Only after everyone has understood the strategy are you allowed to move forward and watch another video.
6. After you have watched all 9 videos and have understood it (all group members), you may start making your poster (see diagram below). Every student will need to learn and understand each strategy. You will use the numbers above and use each strategy to solve it. You need to show all working out with explanations.
7. To win the TNT, it is not about who finishes first. The teachers will ask random groups to present and random students to present within that group. If the student chosen cannot explain how to do a strategy, the group as a whole will not win the TNT.

Partitioning

An Example of Partitioning
eg when adding 163 480 and 150 000,
163 480 could be partitioned as 150 000 + 13 480, so that 150 000 could then be doubled and added to 13 480

Why we learn about partitioning
The reason we are learning about partitioning is to help us with...
- understand how to break up numbers

- for addition

Record on your ipad, your understanding of why and when we partition in maths and what standard and non-standard partitioning is. You may provide examples using paper. Your video should not be longer than 4 minutes. You will need to record it only after you understand what they really mean.

 - Use the image below to help with your explanation regarding "Why and When We Use Partitioning in Maths".
